About Obesity

As we all know in India urbanization and modernization has been associated with obesity. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in India in the 21st century, with morbid obesity affecting 5% of the country’s population. India is following a trend of other developing countries that are steadily becoming more obese. Unhealthy, processed food has become much more accessible following India’s continued integration in global food markets. Indians are genetically susceptible to weight accumulation especially around the waist. Between 1998 and 2005, India’s overweight rates increased by 20%.Currently, almost 1 in 5 men and over 1 in 6 women are overweight.
In some urban areas, the rates are as high as 40%.As far as prevalence of obesity goes, Kerala is second only to Punjab with twenty four to thirty four percentage being over weight or obese. It is important to notice that obesity is closely associated with a gamete of non communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyper cholesterolemia, infertility, osteoarthritis and cardio vascular diseases. An attempt to list all of them would run in to several pages. Obesity considerably reduces the quality of life and lifespan. It is observed that increasing rate of obesity would cut the life span by 1.02 years per 10 years. Now time has come that we should actively participate in public health campaign similar to those that have been employed in anti-smoking to turn around the obesity trend.
