Obesity, now the most menacing pandemic, is the root cause for most modern “life style” diseases like Type 2 Diabetes. Studies show that 60% of all adults and over 20% of children in the USA are Obese, and as is the trend India, especially Kerala, with its health indices similar to the west, follows the leader. Diabetes(type2), Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia, Snoring and Sleep Apnea, Polycystic Ovarian disease and consequent Infertility in females, Varicose Veins, Asthma, Migraine, Liver cirrhosis, Depression etc are just a few of the diseases directly linked to and regress proportionately with Obesity. Research has shown that even certain cancers (like Cancer of the Uterus, Ovary, Colon etc) have been found to be linked to obesity. A deadly combination of Diabetes, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia and Obesity is the main cause for increasing incidence of Heart attacks and Brain attacks (Stroke). INFACT OBESITY HAS NOW COME TO RECOGNISED BY AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGISTS AS A SEPARATE DISEASE ENTITY THAT REQUIRES URGENT TACKLING.

How do we say a person is Obese?

Although there are several complicated calculations, Body mass index (BMI), Weight in kilograms/Height in meter 2, is the universally accepted index. A BMI of less than16 is considered underweight, 16 to 25 normal and 25 to 30 overweight. A BMI over 30 is considered obese, 30 to 35 being class1, 35 to 40 being class 2 and over 40 class 3 (MORBID) obesity

Why is there an exponential increase in Obesity?

Although genetic factors play a role, lack of exercise and fast food (junk food) culture are the two main reasons

How do you tackle this menace?

Since increased food intake and lack of exercise are considered the main reasons, it would be logical to assume that increasing exercising and reducing food intake (dieting) would help overcome obesity. Unfortunately, in most people, although there is a drop in weight initially (a few kilos), over a period of time body sets its basal metabolic rate to a lower level and weight stabilizes. Massive weight loss is almost never achieved with just exercising and dieting. BARIATRIC SURGERY HAS NOW BEEN ACCEPTED AS THE ONLY PERMANENT SOLUTION TO MASSIVE WEIGHT GAIN IN MORBIDLY OBESE Although Bariatric surgery includes over 60 modifications of surgeries intended at weight loss, they can be broadly classified into restrictive procedures ,that reduce the quantity of food intake(as typified by Laparoscopic sleeve Gastrectomy, LSG), and malabsorptive procedures that include an additional amount of malabsorption as well so that even the reduced amount of food taken in is not fully absorbed (typified by Gastric Bypass). As of now LSG accounts for over 80% of all Bariatric procedures in India and it typically causes 55 to 70% of excess body weight loss.(meaning a person with 150 Kg weight ,and an ideal weight of 70Kg would stand to loose 70% of the excess 80 Kg just by the surgery. This can be augmented by exercising). Gastric Bypass causes even more excess body weight loss (approx.80%), but needs supplementation of vitamins and calcium as routine. Modifications of these surgeries aimed at tackling Diabetes (Metabolic Surgeries) are also coming into vogue.

From a commercial point of view , Obesity and its treatment offers a big market which many have already exploited, taking advantage of the common mans ignorance and fear. Most of these treatment options serve only in draining the pocket! As doctors already involved in obesity management and practitioners of “ Evidence based Medicine”, we, a group of medical personnel found this trend distressing. Under the leader ship of Dr. Koshy George (Eminent Bariatric Surgeon), Dr. Mathew John (Endocrinologist), Dr. K.S. Krishnakumar (Plastic Surgeon), Dr.A.Haris (Anaesthetist), Mr. Jim Gopalakrishnan (Physiotherapist and Physical trainer), Ms. Malini John (Clinical Psychologist) and other support staff and experts in the field got together to form a group. The aim of this group was to provide primary awareness to general public about Obesity and its health issues and offer ‘comprehensive’ obesity management to those suffering from this menace thus, bringing all aspects of Obesity Care under one roof, was formed in June 2011, OBESITY SOLUTIONS. Since its launch, Obesity Solutions has helped over 1000 grateful people overcome permanently, Obesity and related health issues like Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Polycystic Ovarian disease and Female infertility, Snoring and sleep apnea, Migraine, Depression etc. Though its office is located in Trivandrum, Obesity Solutions offers Bariatric Surgery in all major cities of Kerala.
